About Maasai Girls Education Emancipation (MGEE)
Maasai Girls Education Emancipation (MGEE)
is a grassroots organization founded by Maasai friends and natives of Losirwa village in Monduli District, Arusha Region. Inspired by the challenges faced by Maasai girls in accessing education, the founders committed themselves to improving the lives of girls and women within their community.
MGEE’s mission is to empower Maasai girls and women through education and community awareness, particularly around the harmful impacts of ignorance, Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C), early and forced marriage, and other forms of gender-based discrimination and violence.
What sets MGEE apart is its culturally sensitive and community-driven approach. Rather than imposing change, the organization promotes dialogue and mutual understanding, ensuring that its initiatives are respectful of Maasai traditions while encouraging positive transformation.
MGEE serves as a thoughtful alternative to aggressive anti-ignorance campaigns that have often failed due to lack of cultural insight and community involvement. Its vision, mission, and strategies are deeply rooted in the lived experiences of Maasai women and informed by careful, patient ethnographic research.
