MGEE Events Overview

The Maasai Girls Education Emancipation (MGEE) program hosts a variety of carefully planned events throughout the year to ensure the holistic development of scholarship recipients and to promote girls’ education in Maasai communities.

At the beginning of each year, MGEE kicks off with a Program Launch and Orientation Day in mid-January. This event welcomes new scholars into the program, provides them with essential information about their scholarships, and introduces them to their mentors and fellow participants. Shortly afterward, in early February, the School Supply Distribution Week takes place. Scholars receive school uniforms, textbooks, personal hygiene kits, and other necessary learning materials to support their academic journey.

In March, MGEE joins the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day. This event highlights the progress of Maasai girls in education, featuring testimonies from successful students and community role models. It serves as an advocacy platform to emphasize the importance of investing in girls' education.

April begins with a Parent-Teacher Engagement Forum that brings together guardians, teachers, and MGEE staff to discuss the academic progress and well-being of scholars. In May, the focus shifts to health with a Wellness and Reproductive Health Workshop designed to equip the girls with knowledge about their bodies, hygiene, and wellness. June culminates in the observance of the Day of the African Child, where scholars and community members celebrate African heritage through songs, dances, and discussions that promote the rights of children, especially girls.

In July, MGEE conducts a Mid-Year Academic Review, assessing scholars' school performance and offering remedial support where needed. A major highlight of the third quarter is the Annual Mentorship Retreat held in August. This week-long retreat gathers all scholars for interactive workshops, leadership training, and motivational talks from successful women of Maasai origin and beyond. In September, MGEE hosts a Community Dialogue on FGM and Early Marriage, providing a safe space for discussions aimed at eliminating harmful cultural practices through education and community consensus.

The final quarter of the year includes high-impact advocacy and preparation activities. In October, MGEE celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child, hosting community events that uplift the voices of girls and promote their rights. November marks the beginning of the Scholarship Application Drive, during which the organization visits schools and villages to identify new potential scholars. Finally, in December, MGEE closes the year with the End-of-Year Gala and Recognition Ceremony. This event celebrates the achievements of scholars, appreciates mentors and sponsors, and inspires the community to continue supporting girls' education.

Throughout the year, ongoing activities such as monthly mentorship sessions, home visits, and academic monitoring help ensure continuous support for the scholars. These events and initiatives form the heartbeat of the MGEE program, driving its mission to uplift and empower Maasai girls through education.
